New Archbishop for Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky, JUNE 12, 2007 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI appointed Bishop Joseph Kurtz as the ninth bishop of the Archdiocese of Louisville.

Bishop Kurtz, 60, has been serving as bishop of Knoxville since 1999.

Joseph Kurtz was born Aug. 18, 1946, in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, and was ordained in 1972. He served as a priest for 27 years in the Diocese of Allentown.

He will be installed as archbishop on Aug. 15.

The Archdiocese of Louisville has more than 200,000 Catholics in 121 parishes with 214 priests, 111 permanent deacons, and 795 religious sisters and brothers.
