Rome Prays for Peru's Quake Victims

VATICAN CITY, AUG. 21, 2007 (Zenit.org).- The prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America will preside over a Mass bringing Romans together to pray for Peru.

The Embassy of Peru to the Holy See announced that Thursday, in the Basilica of San Camilo de Lelis, a Mass will be said for the numerous victims of the earthquake that devastated the country Aug. 15.

As a sign of solidarity, numerous diplomatic representatives will participate. A number of Peruvians residing in Rome are also expected.

For their part, the Italian bishops' announced today that their conference sent €1 million ($1.35 million) to aid those affected by the magnitude-8 earthquake.

In a press statement, the conference also invited ecclesial communities "to pray and to support the projects aimed at alleviating the sufferings of the Peruvians."
