LORENZAGO DI CADORE, Italy, JULY 26, 2007 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI thanked the people of Lorenzago di Cadore and the surrounding areas for the welcome he received during his summer holiday.
The Pope met today with civil authorities of the Veneto region and the police who were responsible for security during his visit to the Alpine mountains of northern Italy. His vacation ends Friday.
"At the end of these two weeks spent here in the beautiful land of the Dolomites, I can truly say with my heart, thanks to all of you, to each one, for your service and your efforts," the Holy Father said. "Your silent, discreet and competent presence, day and night, gave me space for unforgettable repose, rest of body and soul."
He continued: "We are surrounded here by the divine goodness visible in the mountains. But, during all this time, I have been surrounded above all by human goodness, by your goodness, that was always with me.
"You have been real guardian angels for me, invisible and silent, but always present, ready -- and the memory of your presence in these days will remain with me."
Benedict XVI heads to the pontifical residence at Castel Gandolfo, near Rome, on Friday and will resume his ordinary duties.
