VATICAN CITY, JULY 2, 2007 (Zenit.org).- Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone and Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora met to discuss the problems of Christian communities in the Middle East.
Thursday's meeting in the Vatican "provided an opportunity to examine the delicate situation in the region, with reference to the situation and the problems of Christian communities in the Middle East," explained a communiqué.
The Vatican statement added: "The discussions then dwelled on the political difficulties of Lebanon, on the serious risks to its security, and on initiatives underway to overcome the current crisis.
"Particular emphasis was given to the need to relaunch dialogue among all components of society, each of which is called to contribute to the common good of the country.
"The international community is asked to accompany these efforts, so decisive for Lebanon and for all the Middle East."
Cardinal Bertone was accompanied in the meeting by Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, Vatican secretary for relations with states.
