VATICAN CITY, JULY 1, 2007 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI bestowed the pallium on 46 metropolitan archbishops from around the world on the solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, a symbol of their bond with him.
During the address he gave after the Angelus on Thursday, the Pope explained that "the pallium is a liturgical insignia that expresses the bond of communion that links its wearer to the Successor of Peter."
Five other prelates will receive their pallium in their respective sees.
Benedict XVI received in audience the 47 archbishops and their families on Saturday in the Paul VI Hall.
The Pope said to them that the "pallium is worn by archbishops as an external sign of their hierarchical communion with the successor of Peter in the governance of God's people."
He said that it "also represents the burden of the episcopal office, calling to mind the duty of the faithful to support the pastors of the Church by their prayers and to cooperate generously in the transmission of the Gospel and the growth of Christ's Church in truth, unity and holiness."
