Romanian prime minister thanks Pope for defense of immigrants

Vatican, Nov. 7, 2007 (CWNews.com) - Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu met with Pope Benedict XVI on November 7, and thanked the Pontiff for his efforts on behalf of Romanian immigrants living in Italy.

Tariceanu praised the Pope for advocating "tolerance and integration" at a time when some political leaders in Italy have been pressing for wholesale deportations. Romanian immigrants in Italy, estimated to number well over 500,000, have been blamed for a wave of crime in recent weeks. Tariceanu argued that these charges reflect "a wave of xenophobia."

A Vatican statement released after the Pope's meeting with the Romanian leader confirmed that they had discussed the need "to welcome immigrants and educate people in tolerance."

Theophany

When You were baptized in the Jordan, O Lord, * worship of the Trinity was revealed, * for the Father's voice bore witness to You, calling You His “beloved Son”, * and the Spirit in the form of a dove confirmed the certainty of these words. * O Christ God, * Who appeared and enlightened the world, glory to You! (Troparion, Tone 1)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

You have appeared to the whole world today, * and Your light, O Lord, is signed upon us, * who with knowledge sing praise to You: * "You have come, and You have appeared, O Unapproachable Light." (Kontakion, Tone 4)

Random Proverb

"Hear, O sons, a father's instruction, and be attentive, that you may gain insight, for I give you good precepts; do not forsake my teaching." (Proverbs 4:1,2 ESV)

Pray Without Ceasing

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Wisdom from the Church Fathers

When the holy Abba Anthony lived in the desert he was beset by boredom, and attacked by many sinful thoughts. He said to God, 'Lord, I want to be saved but these thoughts do not leave me alone; what shall I do in my affliction? How can I be saved?'

A short while afterwards, when he got up to go out, Anthony saw a man like himself sitting at his work, getting up from his work to pray, then sitting down and plaiting a rope, then getting up again to pray. It was an angel of the Lord sent to correct and reassure him: 'Do this and you will be saved.' At these words, Anthony was filled with joy and courage. He did this, and he was saved.
