Byzantine Catholic Church in America: News of the East

Press Release of the Ukrainian Byzantine Catholic Apostolate of Ss. Cyril and Methodius at West Lafayette (Purdue University), Indiana

WEST LAFAYETTE, INDIANA—The Ukrainian Byzantine Catholic Apostolate of Ss. Cyril and Methodius will be offering a monthly Divine Liturgy at Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church Sunday, October 1, and Sunday, Nov. 5, at 5:30 p.m., and monthly thereafter, except January and May, through the Purdue University academic year. The celebrant will be Rev. Fr. Gerald Borawski, pastor of St. Mary’s (Roman) Catholic Church, Frankfort, Ind.

Thomas Aquinas Church, located at 535 West State Street on the Purdue campus in West Lafayette is hosting the apostolate for a second consecutive year. The apostolate is under the official jurisdiction of the Most Rev. Bishop Michael Wiwchar, C.SS.R.,D.D. of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of St. Nicholas in Chicago.

The Divine Liturgy is being celebrated to give Purdue Byzantine Catholic students and other interested people access to the Byzantine [Catholic] Divine Liturgy. The nearest Eastern Catholic parishes are in Indianapolis and northwest Indiana.

Because the Eastern Catholic Churches are fully in communion with the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, assisting at the Divine Liturgy (the term Eastern Catholics use to describe the Latin Rite term ‘Mass’) satisfies the Sunday obligation for Catholics of all Churches.
