Byzantine Catholic and other Eastern Catholic Churches
Byzantine Catholics (also known as "Greek Catholics") are organized according to eparchies (dioceses) and exarchates (mission dioceses). Historically eparchies and exarchates were defined geographicaly and this is still the norm and the goal. As Eastern Catholics emmigrated to the Americas from the countries of their spiritual and cultural ancestors there was a pastoral need for jurisdictions to be set up along ethnic lines. These jurisdictions still exist today even though in places like the United States parishes are made up of people who are now mostly culturally American and where ethnicity factors far less in parish life then it did a generation or two ago (although there remain a sizable number of parishes where the original ethnicity is a large part of parish life). Perhaps they will someday merge together as Byzantine Catholics proclaim the Gospel to peoples of all ethnicities.
Currently there are overlapping Byzantine Catholic jurisdicitons that were orignally created based upon ethnicity: Ruthenian, Ukrainian, Melkite and Romanian. Russian Byzantine Catholics and Italo-Greek-Albanian Byzantine Catholics do not have thier own hierarchy and are subject to the local Roman Catholic bishop.
Below you will find a complete listing of Byzantine Catholic and other Eastern Catholic jurisdicitons for North America.
Byzantine: | Melkite | Romanian | Ruthenian | Russian | Slovak | Ukrainian | Italo-Greek |
Other Eastern Catholic: | Armenian | Chaldean | Maronite | Syriac | Syro-Malabar | Syro-Malankara |
Byzantine Italo-Greek-Albanian:
There is no ecclesiastical structure for Italo-Greek-Albanian Catholics in North America; they currently fall under the jurisdiction of the local Roman Catholic ordinary. Italo-Greek Catholics in the state of Nevada are canonically part of the Eparchy of the Holy Protection of Mary of Phoenix (formerly the Eparchy of Van Nuys).

Byzantine-Russian:
There is no ecclesiastical structure for Russian Greek (Byzantine) Catholics in North America. Russian Catholics currently fall under the canonical jurisdiction of the local Roman Catholic ordinary.
However, the Russian Greek-Catholic parish in El Segundo, CA, is formally committed to the spiritual omophorion of the Melkite Eparchy of Newton by mutual agreement of the hierarchs involved. Also by mutual agreement of the hierarchs involved, the Russian parish in San Francisco is informally committed to the spiritual omophorion of the Melkite Eparchy and that in Denver, also informally, to the spiritual omophorion of the Romanian Eparchy of St George in Canton. The Russian parish in NYC is currently served by Melkite clergy, but has no formal or informal relationship with the Melkite Eparchy.

Happy New Year!
Wisdom from the Church Fathers
Souls that love truth and God, that long with much hope and faith to put on Christ completely, do not need so much to be put in remembrance by others, nor do they endure, even for a while, to be deprived of the heavenly desire and of passionate affection to the Lord; but being wholly and entirely nailed to the cross of Christ, they perceive in themselves day by day a sense of spiritual advance towards the spiritual Bridegroom. St. Macarius the Great |
